Ascot bull sires champion angus steer in trade carcase competition
KNOWN for their top quality dairy cattle, Coralie and Bill Stewart, of Canningvale on the Darling Downs, shocked even themselves when they took out the broad ribbon for Champion Domestic Trade Carcase at the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society’s Prime Cattle Hoof and Hook competition last week. Operating Gilabils Holstein Friesian Stud, the Stewarts have only been “dabbling” in prime angus cattle for the past seven years, and have exhibited cattle at the Warwick competition for the past three years.
“This is by far our best result,” Mrs Stewart said. “We have had a few placings in the past, but this is our first broad ribbon.” Their 445kg champion angus steer was bred on their 100-hectare proper ty, and had a total of 90 days grain. The 10-month-old calf scored maximum points for his P8 fat depth, had an eye muscle area of 87 and dressed at 55.7%.
He was sired by Ascot Hero H152,bought at the 2013 Ascot Bull sale.
